My third book in 2006 was co-authored by Michael Evans, himself a #1 New York Times bestselling author and a Middle East analyst, was “Showdown With Nuclear Iran: Iran’s Messianic Mission to Destroy Israel and Cripple the United States.”

Researching and writing this book gave me an opportunity to focus on the radical religious ideology of the Shi’ite Muslims that control Iran.  The fundamental conflict in the Middle East is between Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims.  Shi’ite Muslims believe the leaders of Islam must be family descendants of Mohammed.  Sunnis, in direct contrast, believe Islam is to be controlled by secular leaders, as was the case with Turkey’s control over the former Ottoman Empire. Shi’ite Muslims believe in the “Hidden Imam,” called the “Mahdi,” born in 879 AD, who they believe went down a well and into hiding as a young boy.  Shi’ites hold that it will take an apocalypse to bring the Mahdi out of hiding.

When we wrote this book, the President of Iran, Mahoud Ahmedinajad, was openly proclaiming that to achieve Iran’s goal to bring on the apocalypse, required Iran to develop nuclear weapons to destroy Israel. This book argued that that religious ideology would induce the Shi’ite leadership in Iran to start a war with Israel that could easily develop into a catastrophic regional nuclear war, if not a worldwide nuclear confrontation.
